|Henry Fonda AND Gene Tierney?! I'm sold!|
Right! So, here's the thing ...
Not too long ago I said that I couldn't stand watching westerns. I had always avoided them like the plague because the few times that I had tried watching a western film or two, they just plain bored me. Well, something must have changed between then and now (maybe it's because I've gotten older?), but I've come here on a Sunday night expressly to say this:
I AM OFFICIALLY IN LOVE WITH THE WESTERN FILM GENRE. Hallelujah!
First, a couple weeks ago, I watched Destry Rides Again (1939) and I loved it. Like, absolutely enjoyed it 100%! Then, yesterday afternoon, I watched The Return of Frank James (1940) and guess what?! I freaking loved that one too! What the heck is going on 'round here? Now, granted, the delicious Henry Fonda was in the latter film so that could have swayed me a little bit into liking the picture as much as I did. Nevertheless, it was a fantastic film!
I've always liked High Noon (1952) but that was about it in terms of western films that I actually enjoyed sitting through. I've tried watching a few of John Wayne's movies before but I just couldn't move past his monotone voice. It bothers me. I'm sure a lot of you love John Wayne, but I've never understood his appeal. I'm not going to sit here and say that he's overrated because I'm sure he's not! It's not him, it's me.
So, what this boils down to is the fact that I'm now a western newbie. I want you to tell me which films I should watch. Stagecoach might be one of them (and yes, I know John Wayne is in it), or Shane, or even The Good, the Bad & the Ugly. You tell me. I'm all ears!
