|Summer Under the Stars 2012: One of the days I was most excited about last year!|
There are three months out of the year that I eagerly await on TCM: February, August, and December. Fans and avid watchers of TCM will know why, but if you're wondering, here are the details:
- February = 31 Days of Oscar
- August = Summer Under the Stars
- December = Holiday Programming
Beginning tomorrow, August 1st, TCM's annual Summer Under the Stars (SUTS) festival starts! The blogosphere is already alive and pumping with a flurry of SUTS blog posts, blogathons, and appreciation threads so I thought I'd add my little take on it to the already massive pile.
Let me begin by telling you what I don't like about SUTS: the stars and programming that I'm itching to see are usually scheduled on weekdays. I work full-time (that's five days a week, Monday to Friday) and I hate it when I have to program my cable box for practically the entire day just to enjoy the films I'm most excited about. For instance, Humphrey Bogart is scheduled to kick off SUTS this year on Thursday August 1st and he is one of my all-time favourite classic movie stars. I would love to sit at home in front of the TV all darn day to watch his line-up of films, but instead, I'll be stuck at the office brooding over the fact that I'm missing everything (and probably sobbing into my box of tissues).
Now that I've gotten that little rant out of the way, let me tell you about the things I love about SUTS: I love pouring over the schedule and highlighting the movies I'd like to see, I love that TCM pays tribute to lesser known stars just as often as they do the more popular ones, I love how TCM doesn't exclude silent film stars from the August schedule, and I love the idea of a whole entire day being devoted to just ONE actor/actress/director. All of these things please me immensely and I'm often hard-pressed to find anything that'll actually upset me come August!
This year, I'm especially looking forward to the following dates:
- August 1 = Humphrey Bogart (A no-brainer)
- August 2 = Doris Day
- August 8 = Ramon Novarro (I swear, I've become obsessed with silent films lately)
- August 10 = Lana Turner
- August 11 = Henry Fonda (I'm so excited to finally see Mister Roberts!)
- August 14 = Bette Davis (Another no-brainer)
- August 17 = Wallace Beery
- August 18 = Natalie Wood
- August 20 = Hattie McDaniel (Woohoo!)
- August 23 = Elizabeth Taylor
- August 25 = Clark Gable (A fan! A fan! Get me a damn fan!)
I know you're all equally as excited as I am about this year's SUTS (or even more so!), so why don't you tell me in the comments section below which days you're looking forward to most!
